  • Chandrayaan 2 🚀

There were billions of hopes and whole world went to a standstill for some 15-20 minutes on 7 September, 2019. It was live for everyone to see the history been written. India was about to become the fourth country to get its lander land on moon, and that too possibly in first attempt. But just around 2.1 km away, we lost contact with the Vikram lander. 2.1 km is like less than a human step compared to the distance Chandrayaan 2 has successfully travelled in space. Last moment thrills like never before. Though it stopped contact just before landing, it is still 95% success of the project because the Orbiter is still there orbiting around the moon and capturing information, communicating to Indian Deep Space Network. Goal of the Mission The Moon’s south polar region is the place at moon where Chandrayaan 2 was supposed to make soft landing. This is the region where no country has landed before. The reason why , it is landed on South Pole because this region remains in darkness for a longer time than other regions of the moon, it is highly likely to find more water there. Also it is expected to have more information about the life in past at moon and fossil record of the early solar system. It can also help in understanding the moon’s environment. Let’s know about it’s parts: Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark-III (GSLV Mk-III) The GSLV MK-III was chosen to carry Chandrayaan 2 to its designated orbit. This three-stage vehicle is India's most powerful launcher to date, and is capable of launching 4-ton class of satellites to the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). Its components are: S200 solid rocket boosters L110 liquid stage C25 upper stage Orbiter The Chandrayaan 2 orbiter which was sent to be on moon's orbit, is a box-shaped device with an orbital mass of 2379 kg and solar arrays capable of generating 1000 W power. The Orbiter has been successfully placed in lunar's orbit and it is observing the lunar surface. The other job for Orbiter was to relay communication between Earth and Vikram. The orbiter has a scientific payload: Visible terrain mapping camera, Neutral mass spectrometer, Synthetic aperture radar, Near infrared spectrometer, Radio occultation experiment, Soft X-ray spectrometer Solar X-ray monitor. Vikram After the orbiter is placed into orbit, next step was to make a very slow walking pace landing of Vikram on the moon. The lander, named Vikram, had a mass of 1471 kg (including the rover), and could generate 650 W of solar power. The lander was made to communicate directly to the Indian Deep Space Network, the orbiter, and the rover. The lander carried many sensors to observe moons surface like a camera, seismometer, thermal profiler, Langmuir probe, and a NASA-supplied laser retroreflector. Pragyan The plan was the Pragyan which is a 6-wheeled robotic vehicle, which was inside the Vikram, will come out of the Vikram after soft landing and roam around the surface of moon at a distance of max 500 m from the Vikram. So that whatever info it collects it sends to Vikram and Vikram to send the data to the Earth. The rover, Pragyan (also Pragyaan), was the lightest with a mass of 27 kg that runs on 50 W of solar power and can travel up to 500 m at a speed of 1 cm per second. The rover communicates directly with the lander. the rover will hold cameras, alpha-proton X-ray spectrometer, and a laser-induced ablation spectroscopy experiment. Major Events of the Mission 22 July 2019 : Chandrayaan 2 was launched at 9:13 UT (2:43 p.m. Indian Standard Time) from Satish Dhawan Space Center on Sriharikota Island on an GSLV Mark III. 14 August 2019 : The lander-orbiter pair went into an initial elliptical (170 x 40400 km altitude) Earth parking orbit, followed by a trans-lunar injection. 20 August 2019 : The pair entered lunar polar orbit. 2 September 2019 : The lander and orbiter separated. The orbiter evolves into a 100 km altitude circular polar orbit and the Vikram lander maneuvered into a 30 x 100 km orbit with a plan to land on the surface in the high latitude areas near the south pole, between two craters, Manzinus C and Simpelius N. 7 September 2019: between about 1:30 and 2:30 a.m. Indian local time (Sept. 6, 20:00-21:00 UT). Contact was lost during the descent at an altitude of about 2.1 km, the data are being analyzed. As per the info given by ISRO, the orbiter mission is planned for one year, but it has fuel to last upto 7 years. Vikram has hard landed as per images taken by orbiter. The rover was to be deployed using a ramp shortly after landing. It is not sure rover came out or not since no communication could be established. Since, lander and rover mission was planned only for 14-15 days, 21 september, would be last day to try for establishing communication with the lander. Let's hope for the best and cheers for the huge success of ISRO.

  • Neuroscience

Reference: https://backyardbrains.com/ It doesn't give you good vibes when there is something external that can control your mind. But it can have positive effects too in medical science. 'Neuroprosthetics' is the word. It means communicating with living neurons to control something using a machine. But it is well known that if spinal nerves are damaged, muscles can be stimulated themselves. This process is called 'functional electrical simulation'. This can be used in medical science to help someone to swing foot forward who otherwise is not able to do so. The same concept can be used for the movement of an artificial limb or bionic arm, in which muscle activity can be used to control hand movements. Science Behind Our body has billions of neuron cell. They generate electrical impulse. But we do not generally feel that because there is a gap between neuron cell so they do not connect like a wire and generate electrical impulse. But when we touch something hot, the neuron cells crosses the gap hundreds of time to make the impulse reach to the brain when we feel that and instruct our muscles to remove our hand off the hot thing. This can be achieved through external electrical impulses too. Hope this thing can be a little clearer to the readers. So, if you go to the link above, you will find a number of experiments in which a simple device generating electrical impulse to neuron cells that in turn makes you move your muscles. So, in a sentence machine has the power to control your muscles. This may sound dangerous. But it can be a blessing if you are happy with the thing who is controlling the device or impulsion. It would be even amazing if your own brain does that. Using such devices has to be very carefully done, specially they should not be used near the throat or spine as it may cause harm to one's vertebrae, that may cause an unwanted situation too. Stay safe and alert.

  • Vr Motion sickness Solution: Boarding VAR

Reference: https://www.boardingvar.com/ Many of us feel Motion Sickness, while sitting in a bus or sometimes car for a long journey, but most of us do not discuss about it. As per a study, Motion sickness is due to conflict in sensory signals to the brain. See the video below for more detail about motion sickness : One of the main reasons that Virtual Reality(VR) devices has not become as popular as it should be, is motion sickness due to using VR devices for 15 minutes or more. Number of VR headsets has been created but none made up a mark among gamers or normal users because of this reason. The Boarding VAR device is something that has been created to solve Virtual Reality motion sickness. It has been created by "The Ollioules", a France-based Boarding Ring team. The special thing about this device is, it can be attached to any headset and it can counter the "sensorial conflict" due to using VR, and prevent nausea, dizziness and headaches due to VR motion sickness. The company has recently won CES Innovation Awards for the world's first solution to avoid VR sickness. Quoting the words of Cofounder and CMO Marilous Suc at the company's CES 2019 booth “We developed little add-ons that could be easily implemented in all kinds of virtual reality headsets,” . “It sends you some light signals that are consistent with your body movement, so you will avoid the conflict between your inner ear and your peripheral vision.” The device is expected to come into the market at the end of 2019. As of now, the device is in pre-industrialization step and they are making prototypes. Other than VR motion sickness countering device, it is amazing that the company is also developing other products to eliminate motion sickness of other types as well.

  • Transparent Oled display

We have already heard about transparent displays, so what is new about this OLED Display. One might have seen transparent screens at airport or exhibitions, but the screen required a backlight or an enclosed space, to make the pixels visible, and that is called Standard Transparent LCD Screens. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. It is a technology that does not require backlighting, instead the pixels emit their own light. It also do not require any enclosure or covering so as to see pixels. It is a new development in display technology. A person can see what is on the screen and behind the screen too. It is like any other monitor or TV screen on which any interactive or dynamic content can be played. Unlike Transparent LCD screens, transparent OLED screens display black content as transparent instead of white content. OPTIONAL TOUCH: Transparent OLED screens along with Pro Display Touch Frames to create touch enabled interactive transparent screens. We have seen its features till now, let us talk about specifications and applications. Specifications: High contrast ratio High speed response High transmittance FHD resolution (1920 x 1080) Viewing angle free Low power consumption DE (Data enable) mode The interface (10 lanes @ 1920 x 1080 60Hz) of LVDS Diagonal screen sizes – 55″ maximum size Applications: Applications to this technology is limited by one's own limitations. It can be easily used at any public place to gather attraction of visitors, like museums, parks, exhibitions, parties, etc. It can be made interactive thanks to touch support. One exciting application that I would like to talk about it is that, it can be used as windows or separators of a room that can be switched to be a transparent glass to an opaque screen. See the video below: Future: Augmented Reality, rest many of you can understand, how such displays play great role in Augmented and Mixed Reality applications. • Meet spot

Good Things Come in Small Packages Welcome to the world of Boston Dynamics and meet their robot "SpotMini". They have succeeded in making a nimble robot so stable and so powerful that ten of such robots can pull a truck. It's a robot that can handle objects, climb stairs, adjust its height to go under a table, lift itself back at standing position after flipping over, can walk over the sloped and uneven area. It can be used in offices, homes and outdoors. Nowadays, we do exercises based on 'Animal Flow' where we learn to move and be flexible like an animal. An animal uses its body much more efficiently than a human being. They can't speak and express themselves, hence for most of the things they are dependent on their own senses and body. Most of the animals have greater vision area than a human. Hence, the idea of Boston Dynamics to make robots similar to animals and not a human being is actually a brilliant one. SpotMini is a small four-legged robot. It is an absolute fit in an office or home. SpotMini is environment friendly as it is all-electric and can work for around 90 minutes after a full charge.  All other robots developed by Boston Dynamics makes a little noise. But, SpotMini is the quietest among them. Before SpotMini, Boston Dynamics had developed a robot called Spot. SpotMini has inherited its mobility from Spot. New features in SpotMini ahead of Spot: Ability to handle objects Improved perception sensors, stereo cameras, depth cameras, an IMU, postion/force sensors in the limbs. Sensors has improved navigation and movement manipulation. 5 degree-of-freedom arm. Configuration of Robot 'Spot Mini': Height : 0.84 m Weight : 30 kg Payload : 14 kg Power Source : Battery Actuation : Electric Perception : 3D Vision System No. of Joints : 17 Reference : www.BostonDynamics.com/Spot

  • Water-resistant, transparent, self healing electronic skin

Now, when you have read the title of the blog you may not feel it very interesting, but you may be blown away by the possible applications of such skin and areas where this skin can be used. It can bring down the electronic waste drastically. Read further to know how. "Transparent electronic skin" means we can make transparent resistors, conductors, wires, and complete transparent electronics device. Taking inspiration from a jellyfish, Assistant Professor Benjamin Tee and his team from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the NUS Faculty of Engineering have created an electronic skin. The electronic skin is transparent, stretchable, touch-sensitive, and self-healing in water. It can be used in making water-resistant touchscreens or water sustainable robots. What is that material? They created a gel consisting of a fluorocarbon-based polymer with a fluorine-rich ionic liquid. When combined, the polymer network interacts with the ionic liquid via highly reversible ion-dipole interactions, which allows it to self-heal. Applications Soft robots : The electronic skin is created by printing the novel material into electronic circuits. Because it is soft and stretchable, and its electrical properties change when being touched, pressed or strained, it can be used as various types of sensors. 3D Printable Electronic Products: Since the material is 3D printable, it can be used to make various electronic products quickly and easily. Reduction of Electronic Waste: Imagine if we get a electronic material that can repair itself, it can amazingly reduce millions of tonnes of electronic waste that are generated from broken mobile phones, tablets, etc. Optoelectronic Devices : Future is Mixed Reality. Currently, this material is being planned to use in making novel optoelectronic devices, which can be utilized in many new human-machine communication interfaces.
