- Polymerization MethodsIn Organic Solar Cells·October 14, 2017Polymerization is the process of combining many small molecules (the monomers) into a covalently bonded chain or network. Stille cross coupling - The Stille cross coupling reaction can generate new carbon-carbon bonds, through transmetallation of an organotin compound with a halogenide as coupling partner, with the use of a palladium catalyst system in an a solvent. Suzuki cross coupling - This comprises an organoboron functionalized compound together with an organic halide compound and also apply a palladium catalytic system. Direct arylation - This is a Heck-type coupling and compared to Stille and Suzuki reactions the direct arylation polymerization does not require preparation of stannylated or boronated reagents which eliminates one of the normally more complicated steps in the monomer preparation. - A-FrameIn Virtual Reality·January 21, 2018It’s a framework that we have been waiting for. Developed by Mozilla VR, it is build above WebVR , that was developed by Mozilla VR only. It is here to make development of web based virtual reality applocations very easy. It is an independent, open source project. The great news is it supports most VR headsets such as HTC Vive, Rift, Google Daydream, GearVR, Cardboard. It can also be used for making augmented reality applications. Some key points worth noting about A-Frame are : 1. Developers always stuck with the situation where they have to develop applications that supports multiple hardware. A-Frame supports Cross-Platform VR. It means that is very easy now to build VR applications for HTC Vive, Rift, Google Daydream, GearVR, and Cardboard, with their respective controllers. 2. What if no headset or controller? A-Frame still works on standard desktop and smartphones. 3. A-Frame do not restrict your imagination. It follows three.js framework, means a component structure. Developers can use JavaScript, DOM APIs, three.js, WebVR, JQuery and WebGL with A-Frame. 4. A-Frame has components for geometries, materials, lights, animations, models, raycasters, shadows, positional audio, text, and HTC Vive / Touch / Google Daydream / GearVR / Cardboard controls, that can be used and develop applications at a fast pace. - Why Polymer Solar Cells? In Organic Solar Cells·October 14, 2017The potential advantages of polymer solar cells (e.g. from infinityPV) are numerous including flexibility, processability, low material cost, and independence on scarce resources. The flexibility as an advantage, is shared with thin-film photovoltaics, and is a feature allowing the solar cells to be incorporated into applications where flexibility is an advantage. Solar panels that can be rolled out onto a roof or other surfaces are one option. Processability is another major selling point of polymer solar cells. Both first and second generation solar cells depend on vacuum deposition methods requiring massive amounts of energy; with polymer based organic solar cells, on the other hand, layers are processed from solution and complete solution processed cells are an posibility. This allows for up-scaling the production and thus reducing the cost per area of polymer solar cells. Large rolls of substrate can be used on which the layers are deposited using printing or coating techniques, generally referred to as roll-to-roll coating. The promise of low material cost and minimal use of scarce materials can be realized with polymer solar cells. Many second generation solar cells utilize materials that are scarce in nature. With polymer solar cells this can be avoided. Indium is, however, still used in most polymer solar cells, but demonstrations of indium free solar cells are available. - Solar Cell Parameters & DefinitionsIn Organic Solar Cells·August 26, 2017Open Circuit Voltage (Voc) : Open Circuit Voltage i.e. Voc of a solar cell is the voltage supplied by the solar cell without any load. It is thus the maximum voltage of any solar cell. Short Circuit Current (Isc) : Short Circuit Current i.e. Isc of a solar cell is the maximum current of the solar cell under conditions of a zero resistance load. Fill factor (FF) : Power is product of Voltage and Current. Interestingly, in both cases Isc and Voc , i.e. when either the potential drop or the current flow is zero, the power being the product of the two will be zero. Therefore, a more interesting aspect is the maximum power and how large the maximum power is in respect to the product of the Voc and Isc. This term is what is referred to as the fill factor. Ipmax and Vpmax are the current and voltage at which a solar cell gives maximum power. Fill Factor is the ratio between the maximum power and product of Voc and Isc values (represented by the equation below). Power Conversion Efficiency (PCE) : The power conversion efficiency (PCE) is the general efficiency of the solar cell, i.e. the ratio of generated electricity to incoming light energy (represented by the equation below). It is the primary parameter extracted from the IV curve. Source : http://www.plasticphotovoltaics.org/lc/characterization/lc-measure.html0017
- Polymer Solar CellsIn Organic Solar Cells·October 14, 2017The material used to absorb the solar light in organic solar cells, is an organic material such as a conjugated polymer. The basic principle behind both the polymer solar cell and other forms of solar cells, however, is the same, namely the transformation of the energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation (light) into electrical energy (a current and a voltage), i.e. a physical phenomenon called the photovoltaic effect. This energy conversion is possible with the use of semiconductors. Semiconductors are a group of materials which are in-between an insulator and a conductor. Silicon is a classic example of a semiconductor and is also the material that is currently used in most solar cells, i.e. the first generation solar cells.
